A floating pumping station anchored to steel piles with an aluminum boat tied to it. The surrounding water in this tar pond is flecked with bits of bitumen and a bitumen slick. Over 90 percent of the water used in the bitumen extraction process is recycled from the tar ponds, saving fresh water drawn from the Athabasca River but concentrating the toxins in the tar ponds. |
